I don't care what anyone says, summer begins in June. I decided that back on June 1st or 5th or whatever. It felt like summer, looked like summer and sounded like summer, so it's summer. Why do I care? Because we have so many people from other parts of the country who think it's always summer here, and I feel the need to straighten them out.
All the snowbirds have gone and it's a little more peaceful. I'm playing Bocce again. For some reason I signed up for summer Bocce. What was I thinking? It's hot. It's humid. It's rainy season, and that includes thunderstorms, and maybe a hurricane or two. Thankfully this summer the organizer included a 2-week break. Oh the bliss. I'm now on leave and can stay out of the heat and humidity whenever I want.
A lot of the other activities have shut down for the summer because not enough year-round residents are interested. But, there's always interest in cards, Bingo, and any other activity that involves money changing hands. These old folks love to gamble. I wish them well. At least the clubhouse is air-conditioned.
I've been wanting to start some kind of exercise routine because I've been sitting around too much. I was talking to my neighbors last night about our fitness center where a couple of them have been working out. I thought I could start my routine with a visit there and then a swim in the pool. Bad news. The A/C isn't working. Who knows why. I think they turn it down on the weekends to save money. Anyway, I'll have to wait until next week to try to find out.
Living in a retirement community is no different from living anywhere else.
Oh well, at least we have the pool. I hope.

Am I Having Fun?
I have finally decided that if left alone, I'm happy. Does that mean I'm anti-social? Maybe. Does that mean I don't like people? No. I just don't mind being alone. I can always find something to do.
I went to this month's ladies luncheon at a local restaurant, and had fun. I was lucky enough to sit with people I know and we spent most of the time laughing. One of the women who considers herself a "leading light" put me through a session of 20 questions. I was surprised because she was rude, but since I managed to be very vague, it didn't last long. I've learned over the years how to discourage people from being too nosy.
It's May and so far this year I've been to two Bingo games and one ladies luncheon; played in several Bocce games; and went to a couple of HOA meetings. Pretty boring. But summer is coming and things may pick up. (Doubt it!)
Most of the time I have fun playing Bocce. It reminds me of candlepin bowling which I sometimes played in Maine. Whoever set it up in the beginning put in a clay court with wooden boards on the sides. The clay court is difficult to maintain, and the court is right in the sun. The referee is always a mass of sweat by half way through the game. I think it would be more pleasant to play on the grass under the shade of the trees.
The HOA meetings are usually an unpleasant experience. Nothing is organized and they turn into a free-for-all. But the Board members are volunteers, and they do the best they can. It's the members who think they know everything and usually don't that cause the problems. Most of them don't wait to be called on and just holler out their thoughts. It's quite an experience.
I still haven't been able to organize any new group activities. It seems that as soon as I think of something new, I immediately find reasons why no one would be interested. I'm not sure but I think I really don't want to commit myself to anything. I have so much I want to do read, sew, write, take photographs, and reorganize my work areas. That's in addition to my daily chores.
As soon as we can start walking every day and find things to do that make us laugh, I think we'll be fine.
